Baby Must‑Haves: Essentials for New Parents |From Your Photographer’s Point of View
Bringing home a new baby is a beautiful, emotional, and sometimes overwhelming experience. As a newborn photographer at Jordan Lynn Photography, I get to work closely with families in those sweet early weeks and I’ve seen firsthand what helps keep both babies and parents comfortable and calm during a session, and after the session, too.
That’s why I put together a list of must-have baby items to support new parents both at home and at your photo session. These essentials are all available in my Amazon Baby Essentials Wishlist, curated with love, experience, and a photographer’s eye.
Let’s take a look at a few of my favorite baby basics ; ones I recommend to all new parents.
1. My Brest Friend Nursing Pillow
This nursing pillow is a game-changer for feeding. It provides support and comfort for both baby and parent, and allows for more support while nursing your new baby. This pillow can also be used for bottle feeding too. It stays place and helps keep you baby close during feeding sessions. I really think it promotes better posture and makes feeding sessions more comfortable and efficient, especially in those early, hazy days.
2. Portable Sound Machine
I always recommend bringing a portable sound machine with you when you leave the house with a newborn. The steady hum of white noise soothes babies almost instantly, creating a calm environment that mimics the womb. It helps your little one relax (or fall asleep!). It is magical at home or on the go, especially during car rides and stroller walks.
3. Pacifier
Even if your baby doesn’t usually use one, it’s a great idea to bring a pacifier to your photo session. A few seconds of gentle sucking can calm fussiness and help your baby settle into a pose without fully waking. Many parents worry it’ll interfere with feeding, but for the short time we’re photographing your baby, it can be a secret weapon for a smooth experience.
Look for orthodontic pacifiers made from soft silicone; I’ve included my favorite on this list.
4. Baby Lotion & Comb
Newborn skin can be flaky, dry, or blotchy and while I always use gentle editing to make baby look their best, a little prep beforehand goes a long way. A dab of fragrance-free baby lotion helps hydrate skin and reduce redness.
And don’t forget a baby comb! Even the tiniest bit of hair can benefit from a little grooming to smooth flyaways and keep your baby picture-perfect.
Final Tips for a Successful Newborn Photo Session
- Feed baby before the session, to encourage sleepiness and calm.
- Keep baby warm, swaddles and wraps help, but we’ll also keep the studio cozy.
- Bring a backup outfit, pacifier, and burp cloth, just in case!
- Relax and enjoy the process, babies are unpredictable, and that’s okay. We follow their lead.
